Award winning presenter and children’s author, Anthony Garvey will run a creative writing workshop for children between 7-12 years of age at five primary schools in Leinster in 2017.
The workshop will be delivered in two parts:
The first part of the workshop will run in June 2017 and costs €5 per child. Dates available are:
- Monday, 12th June;
- Tuesday, 13th June;
- Wednesday, 14th June;
- Thursday, 15th June and;
- Friday, 16th June.
Anthony can easily deliver three separate sessions to different classes or years in a single day. He will begin at the start of the school day and leave when you finish. Sessions typically hold between 20 to 50 children. There is a minimum requirement of 60 children per school per day (20 children minimum per class).
During the first workshop, which will last for 80 minutes (2 classes in length), the children will learn how to:
- Write an opening that builds tension and creates mystery
- Create and develop a successful main character
- Construct an atmospheric setting for their story
- Use powerful and appropriate vocabulary
- Include sight, sound, touch, taste and smell when writing
Anthony will also read from his first three children’s books and use examples from his own work to help the children write with their heart as well as their heads.

The second part of the workshop will run in the second week of October and costs €5 per child. Dates available are:
- Monday, 9th October;
- Tuesday, 10th October;
- Wednesday, 11th October;
- Thursday, 12th October and;
- Friday, 13th October.
During this workshop, which also runs for 80 minutes, the children will learn:
- The secret to writing strong dialogue and producing a gripping plot
- The importance of building the pace of the story to keep the reader hooked
- Why they should observe the small details and use the power of memory
- How to write a compelling ending to their story
- The importance of reading to improve writing
Anthony will also read from his new book Gravespeakers: Jack which will be launched in September 2017 and will share exclusive content from his fifth book currently under development and due to be published in January 2018.
